A Rapidly Growing Field of Science

Nanotechnology is a rapidly growing field of science, which is particularly interesting for researchers since the early 90s of the last century has become a vital part of the modern technology. Nanomaterials are increasingly becoming a part of our regular lives (Hill and Julang, 2017). They are characterized by new characteristics that differ from those existing at the macro materials. Therefore, nanomaterials are used in innovative products and processes (Fariq et al., 2017). Recently, application of nanomaterial extensively increased, because of high demands for the production of such materials. Classically, the nanoparticles are produced by chemical and physical methods (Stark et al., 2015), as these methods are costly, toxic and non-eco-friendly, scientists are looking forward to synthesizing low cost, non-toxic, eco-friendly nanoparticles (Singh et al., 2016; Sangeetha et al., 2017). Biogenic synthesis of nanoparticles using organisms such as bacteria, fungus and plants emerged as a suitable alternative to the more complex physical and chemical synthetic procedures (Singh et al., 2016). Fungi have some advantages over other microorganisms because they are easy to handle, their nutritional requiems are simple, have a high wall-binding capacity, as well as their capabilities for the intracellular metal uptake (Bhattacharjee et al., 2017). Silver nanoparticles are among the most widely-used metals, and are used as antimicrobial agents, water treatment, textile industries, sunscreen lotions †¦etc. (Raja et al., 2012). We assume that each kind of fungi could have its own machinery to reduce the metals through a production of a group of enzymes. So, the synthesized nanoparticle by each kind of fungi could show a specific characteristic including definite shape and size that makes them effective in many applications, especially as antimicrobial agents. Therefore, the main aim of the present study depends on the wide survey of many fungal species that were isolated from Saudi habitats to investigate their potentiality to synthesize the silver-nanoparticles. The physical characteristics of the newly produced nanoparticles will be studied using accurate and fine techniques including the X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform InfraRed (FT-IR) and the transition electron microscopy (TEM). The antibacterial activity of the characterized silver nanoparticles will be studied against many medically-important bacteria, especially that are involving in human diseases such as Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The expected results of this research are the obtaining of new fungal species that have the ability to produce new AgNPs with the specific characteristic that could be used and a new antibiotic or antibacterial agents to control the bacterial infections especially those have a resistance to the classical chemical antibiotics

Radio Music Essay

Music, I can say, has played an important role to the lives of every human. It has been a source of inspiration and leisure on past times. When you celebrate, music never gets lost and when you need to be calmed, music is also relaxing. As the years pass, along with it are the changes in trend. Characteristics of radio music by then are different of the radio music we have today. Several genres of music flourished from 1950s to 1960s. The birth of Rock and Roll is also dated back significantly in the 1950s. Right now, there is a question asked whether or not people would still listen to the radio despite of the latest gadgets for music are on hand. Listening to the radios are threatened by the latest technology including iPods and mp3 players. Aside from the radio, music is also presented by music channels in the television where music videos are accompanying the song. Radio is the major source of entertainment for the Americans having almost every household own at least one radio. 93% of the Americans owned a radio during that time. It was in the year 1954 that a rock and roll song landed the hit charts. Rock and Roll was a product of several genres including indigenous American jazz, rhythm and blues, swing, and the gospel style. Its roots trace back to the black culture of that moment (Faculty). Another music that was played on the radios is called â€Å"covers† (Faculty). Covering Family Name 2 takes place when a person or a group records again a song that was already recorded by another individual or group. This term’s roots dates back in the year 1966 (Online Etymology Dictionary). Songs back then that were originally sung by black artists were being asked to be covered by white artists. There were a lot of advantages that a â€Å"cover† has. First, they can outsell the original version due to having greater resources and second, the quality of the sound is much better than that of the original version. Rock and Roll had more specific genres which include Rock-a-Billy, Doo Wop, and the â€Å"West Coast† sound. â€Å"Rockabilly† was a mixture of rhythm and blues and country music. The â€Å"Doo Wop sound† traces its origins in the urban North. It has been fondly called and described as 1950s’ â€Å"street corner† music. Under Doo Wop are the characteristics of using â€Å"nonsense syllables† as background rhythm, having emphasis on its harmony, and a different range of voices or parts. Came 1960s and a new kind of rock and roll emerged called â€Å"California Sound. † California is the place where it first started. Rock and roll’s decline happened in the later part of 1950s since companies started to promote â€Å"teen idols. † The themes of their songs are mostly about love (Faculty). Some of the famous and promising artists during this time are the following: Dean Martin, Patti Page, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Eddie Cochran, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley- Don’t Be Cruel, Jailhouse Rock and many others, Arthur â€Å"Big Boy† Crudup, â€Å"Big Mama† Thornton, Hank Williams, Sr. , Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Every Brothers- Bye Bye Love, Roy Orbison, Ricky Nelson, The Marcels- Blue Moon, The Diamonds, Little Eva- Locomotion, The Shirelles- Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? , Neil Sedaka- Breaking Up is Hard to Do, and Paul Anka with his song Diana (Faculty). Family Name 3 At the present, since whatever the trend in America is being adopted by other countries, there are 17 formats that are now playing and being listened to. Ranking from the first, the following are Country, News/ talk/ information, Adult Contemporary, Pop Contemporary Hit Radio, Classic Rock, Rhythmic Contemporary Hit Radio, Urban Contemporary, Urban Adult Contemporary, Oldies, Hot Adult Contemporary, Mexican Regional, Contemporary Christian, All Sports, Alternative, Classic Hits, Classical, and Talk/ Personality (Radio Today). From Rock and Roll, it can be seen from the above information that the taste of music listeners have shifted to many other kinds. In my own observation, today’s folks are getting more acquainted with music that have lively danceable beats but not necessarily with high notes. A lot of the radio stations would play Pop, R&B and Hiphop. The young is the targeted market of these radio stations. Leading artists of today include Beyonce Knowles, Neyo, Chris Brown, Rihanna, Akon, Taylor Swift and many others who have hit the charts just like those mentioned artists in the year 1950s and 1960s. Change Management in Semantic Web Services

Change Management in Semantic Web Services Change Management in Semantic Web Services in Legal Domain using FSM & XXM Introduction With the new paradigm of Service Oriented Computing, many enterprises attempt to utilize services as fundamental elements for developing applications/solutions as an additive layer on top of existing components. The Web Service Controller Architecture (WSCA) for service-based, enterprise-scaled business solutions provides exactly this flexibility. The design, exposure and management of services can be accomplished through a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) that supports the usage, composition and coordination of services in a loosely coupled manner. Web services appear to be particularly suitable for addressing these aspects of a SOA. Furthermore, composition languages such as BPEL add value by composing Web services and facilitating the implementation of business processes. As the SOA paradigm brings this big behavior change relying on loose coupling of services it raises new questions in the area of change management. Change management is a central aspect in any software design, but its complexity for Web services is increased by both composition languages and loose coupling. The resulting advantages like composability, autonomy, message-based communication, and the avoidance of combined compilation and binding prove to be deficiencies in this context. In this paper we discuss these elementary challenges of change management in the area of Web services (Web Service Change Management, WSCM). Currently there are no sound mechanisms and engineering principles for changing Web services and their related entities. Through analysis of a suitable scenario, specifically looking at the details of the Web service provider and consumer roles, one can identify the various problems that exist in this domain. Therefore we will start our approach with the consideration of an application scenario from the business domain of application and change management, the addition of Web servic es in private legal sector. An Overview of a WSCA A WSCA consists of several autonomous outsourced Web services, but acts as a virtually coherent entity. Business entities, in the form of Web services, are often geographically distributed and organizationally independent. While WSCA has a potential to introduce new business opportunities through dynamic alliances, the challenges of fully realizing a WSCA lie in managing changes during its lifecycle through Extreme X Machines (XXM). XXM: In this paper we explore the design changes as made to software projects by the use  of a formal model known as Extreme X-Machines (XXM) [5,6], which  are based on the work of Eilenberg and Holcombe [7,8]. An XXM model describes the functionality of the software without defining exactly how this functionality is achieved. This perspective allows an analysis of functional change whilst excluding specific implementation or requirements issues. XXM are a state based model, they are intended to be us ed by developers as a method to design  their systems from at the top level but here, XXM are used as effectively to analyze and incorporate changes in, even addition of new web services. Each model typically consists of a set of states which correspond to screens in the final system and functions which link the screens together. The functions are typically labeled with an enabling action such as â€Å"click_ok† which corresponds to a user clicking the OK button.

Supply and Demand of Online Music Streaming Essay - 1

Supply and Demand of Online Music Streaming - Essay Example Also, this mode of online streaming is much preferred over the illegal mods of accessing pirated versions of music because this is a legalized form of distribution. There are three main types of demands noted in the online streaming industry. The fans who prefer free audio show high relative elastic demand, the fans who are interested to pay a small amount of fees for streaming audio contents display a mild relative elastic demand in this industry and the fans who are interested to pay any amount for listening to their favourite audio contents account for the highly relative inelastic demand in the online streaming industry (Liebowitz, 2006). Not only the published contents but also electronic musical festivals which are difficult for every person to attend are seeing high popularity of online streaming, As the suppliers try to drive the prices of online streaming, this is also supported by the increasing demand of online streaming by different groups of fans. The market forces have shifted the demand curve towards a steeper trend because the changing landscapes of this industry and digital contents industry have made it favourable for online audio streaming (Krueger, 2005). Also, the increasing threat of content piracy to the considered industry has made the suppliers in this industry support the growth and popularity of online streaming of audio. The streaming of music festivals, rock concerts as well as live playing by musicians have seen an aggregate increase in demands over the recent years.

Who discovered America First - Essay Example On the other hand, the history of Ericksson who is believed to be one of the first Europeans to visit America has not been documented in written form like that of Columbus. It has been mainly recorded in oral form. 2. The discovery of America has had both positive and negative impacts on the western hemisphere. The movement of the Europeans to the western hemisphere resulted in depopulation of the Indian Americans as a result of skirmishes that took place between the Europeans and the native people of America (http://usa.usembassy.de/etexts/history/ch1.htm). This became known as the great dying as they introduced various organisms that caused diseases which lead to death of the native Americans. However, on appositive note, the western hemisphere significantly benefited from the discovery of America. The place witnessed rapid industrialization since it had abundant of resources such as corn which was a staple food in this region. On the other hand, the discovery of America led to religious and civil conflicts between the native Americans and Europeans. As such colonies were established and this led to slavery of the native people. positive benefits were later to be reaped but the early years o f American discovery had negative impacts on the lives of native people in both

Bp oil spill Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Bp oil spill - Essay Example As a result of the explosion, an oil gusher located on the sea bed flowed relentlessly for around three months before the wellhead was finally successfully capped after a number of failed attempts (Robertson & Krauss, 2010). The oil spill had serious repercussions on Bp and its investors as well as other stakeholders in a number of related industries as the company had to claim responsibility for all the damage that was done as a result (Robertson & Krauss, 2010). The level at which the company was affected can be measured via the use of key indicators of performance related to the marketing industry. After investigations were conducted it was determined that Bp was to blame for the accident. However it was determined that Deepwater Horizon operator Transocean and Halliburton which was the contractor of the oil rig was also to blame for their various roles (Robertson & Krauss, 2010). The results of the investigation led to a number of repercussions especially for Bp in particular. Using long term Key indicators of performance one can determine that BP paid a large price for their mistake. In economic terms, BP took a large dent in their financial status as they ended up paying over 4 billion dollars in fines and other expenses in particular. Such a large financial effect can indicate the downfall of a company if not properly managed and handled in an economic manner (Parmenter, 2007). The image of BP also took a serious hit as organizations such as the EPA developed doubts over its integrity and as a result it lost its ability to vie for government contracts after the accident. This displays the fact that the company’s public image took a negative turn which can be dangerous if not overturned as soon as possible (Parmenter, 2007). The news reports also painted the company in a bad light as environmental and other organizations blamed the company for

Abortion vs Adoption Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Abortion vs Adoption - Essay Example Though there are many debates on making abortion safe for mothers, the fact is that no abortion may be considered safe. Considering the varying degrees of effects that affect the mother after this exercise, there should be no debate on the safety of an abortion. These complications may be physical, emotional, spiritual or psychological and do usually affect a mother for the rest of their lives. For instance, statistics today show that about 10% of all mothers in induced abortions have immediate serious complications, with 2% of these complications being life threatening. In addition, there are many mothers who suffer from many minor complications that may involve infections, damage to the uterus, too much bleeding, hemorrhages, and serious injuries in their cervix among others. Some of the major complications that are known today include premature births. This is because in induced abortions, the cervix is opened before its time is due, which damages the cervical muscles. Consequentl y, depending on the degree of the damage, as the woman bear another pregnancy, the baby increases pressure at the cervix where the weakened muscles open prematurely. Moreover, the mother may suffer from sterility on the long term with 3-5% of all aborting women becoming sterile after abortions mainly due to the morbidity of the process. This is more serious when a woman may have venereal disease at the time of an abortion. The major psychological effects related to abortion are mental problems. In a study of aborting mothers in their eight week after abortion, 44% of mothers complained of having nervous disorders, 36% complained of having some serious sleep disturbances, 31% bitterly regretted of having aborted their babies and 11% were placed under psychotropic drugs by a doctor (Ashton 1117). In fact, the research noted that women who had procured an abortion had much higher chances of admission in psychiatric facilities than those who did not. Moreover, these effects are compounded by increasing guilt, and increases in the level of anxiety in the mother, though there is a short period marked by post abortion numbness of what may be termed as emotional paralysis. Teenagers are particularly affected by these post abortion complications. These effects are mostly related to the internal conflict between one’s moral standards, ethics and the decision to abort, which explains the temporary period in which the mother feels relieved. Therefore, with these abortion danger s and side effects, there is need to consider a better and healthier approach for the mother and the baby in cases where the mother may not be interested in the; consequently, pro-adoption becomes the best alternative. In the last three decades, adoption practices have considerably changed in the US; today, there are many couples across the US willing to adopt a child than bearing their own child (Berry 125). This is because today there are more career based families where both partners are in highly involving careers and lack time to undergo the normal child bearing process, mainly driven by changes in the role of women in the labor force. Moreover, there are increasing cases of infertility among many couples, which increases the number of people seeking to adopt children (Berry 125). However, there is a trend where abortion practices, birth controls and a changed impression of families towards single motherhood has drastically reduced the number of available children for adoption (Berry 125). Considering these factors, there are no reasons for women to procure an abortion when there is an increasing demand of healthy children to adopt across the US. One of the adoption practices that has gained much success today is open adoption.

Watershed moments of American history Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Watershed moments of American history - Essay Example Watershed moments are those moments which heralded a strong influence on the history and social attitudes of the people and changed the perception of people. The American history is fraught with such watershed moments, but in the 20th century so many events happened and it is difficult to decide which moments could be called as watershed. The following paragraphs would describe three events and justify them as watershed moments. The most important of these moments is the perhaps the attack on the World trade centre on 9/11. Following the horrific events of that day, the local, national, and international relations changed forever to a very great extent. The attack of 9/11 had a wide ranging effect on the US foreign policy and weakened the relationship between the US and the Islamic states. The attack reframed existing policy in such a way that it was now considered quite just and fair to take violent and aggressive action against rogue nations. The US considered this attack as a threat t o its sovereignty so the period that followed after the attack witness a revival in the cold war and snide policies which were last seen in the World War II. The world saw a new era of 'War against terrorism' which was lead by the US and which resulted in two major wars. Thus it is very clear that the aftermath of the 9/11 made a drastic impact on the whole world and it would not be wrong to call this attack a watershed moment of the 20th century. (Dudziak). The second such event which created such an upheaval, the likes of which cannot be found in any other event is the nuclear bombing on the Nagasaki and Hiroshima. It was the August of the year 1945 in which the world saw the first use of the nuclear weapons ever. The result was only destruction and devastation of the bombed cities however its consequences were more than that. The prowess of the US was witnessed which elevated it to the title of the greatest super-power of the world. The United Nations was also formed soon after the bombing to maintain global peace. The bombings became the watershed moments in the US history as it changed the way the country was seen by other nations. Another example of the watershed moments, though somewhat different is seen is the 1965 Act of Immigration and Nationality. This act is also known as a 'Demographic Revolution'. The act put an end to the quota system, and even the xenophobia which was being promoted in the Americans. The Act was actually a declaration of equality and an end of prevailing prejudice. This erased the sense of exclusion which was felt by the Asians from the side of Americans and resulted in a huge number of Asians ushering into the US territory. The act changed the social attitude of the Americans towards the Asians and proved to be a watershed movement in the US history. Section Two, Answer to Question 3: The Civil rights movement was campaign intended to free the Americans from the grip of ethnic discrimination. This was a movement which demanded the recognition of the black Afro-Americans and an end to the racist policies. The Civil Rights movement began when a black woman 'Rosa Parks' who is often called as the mother of the 'Civil rights movement' refused to give her seat to a white American. But it was not only the Afro-Americans who were involved in the movement, thousands of people of all ethnic groups living in America participated in this Civil rights movements and the liberation movement till the 1970s in the long run. These included students, political leaders, people from religious organizations and even some white liberals; in short the 'liberation' movement was not just the efforts of blacks but the combined struggle against the bigotry and racial discrimination of all the ethnic groups living in America. Previously a very strong and intimidating attitude was adopted by the Americans towards the blacks. They were looked down upon, often became a subject of taunting and were commonly referred

Teachers' Views of The Impact of Instruction in the Inclusion Model Dissertation - 1

Teachers' Views of The Impact of Instruction in the Inclusion Model for students with Learning Disabilities - Dissertation Example It was only in the 1960s that a group of researchers conducted various, extensive studies into the subject of LDs and brought the view that children with LDs could not be termed as handicapped (mentally or physically); but they merely formed a deviation in the learning processes of an individual. With this concept came the theory of inclusive studies, where the children with LDs were put into general classrooms, albeit with some restrictions. Now in the twenty-first century, various experts have come forward with the view of total inclusion, where there would exist no differences between the students (with or without LDs). However, many educators have expressed serious reservations about this process of full inclusion, and they feel that special needs children should be segregated and taught only under the supervision of a special educator. My article will take an in-depth look at the term learning disabilities, while exploring the various perspectives as noticed within the general e ducators, in regards to students with LDs and the full-inclusive educational process. The research has been conducted with the express aim of developing a better understanding of the general educators' perception of children with LD in an inclusive environment, their perception of efficacy in relation to their training, and their perception of the support that they receive in educating these students. Euthanasia Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 2

Euthanasia - Essay Example For example, a doctor who decides to give a lethal injection to his patient who had given him the advance directive not to hasten his death and is now unconscious suffers his/her final stages of an illness that is terminal. There are times when the terms used in defining euthanasia bring about confusion or not clear like the use of the word â€Å"mercy killing† in describing non-voluntary and voluntary euthanasia situations. Countries like European and most especially Netherlands, the major differences between euthanasia, homicide, suicide, and suicides that are assisted are clear. In Canada and the United States, suicide assisted deaths and suicide assisted by physicians are confusing many people when used. Assisted suicide is when the acts of killing an individual are intentional. The word assisted has been added to mean that there is an individual who is providing assistance in the suicide act hence supplies the means like lethal medication prescription or gun, the specific knowledge on how to induce the medicine or use the gun appropriately, or both means and knowledge. North America has used the term assisted suicide in the media industry to mean that act which is directed by an individual intentionally to end the life of another. The reason behind this is because the legal sanctions associated with assisted suicide are less than those of killing a person with an intention of relieving them from the pain of a long term illness thus referred to as â€Å"euthanasia.† Jack Kevorkian a pathologist who made headlines in 1990 for killing over 130 people put his claims of participation in those deaths as that of assisted deaths and not euthanasia. There exists a very fine line between assisted suicide and euthanasia. For instance, Northern Territory of Australia between July 1996 and March 1997 legalized euthanasia through the use of a computer machine that pumped lethal substance to the individual after he/she successfully answers the question aske d by the computer and presses the required key. There are those arguments that are in favor of euthanasia based on individual liberty beliefs and situations of life considered unacceptable. These arguments in favor of euthanasia are based on religious/moral values and those of value and human life quality. The good death is the one that a person falls into eternal sleep thus euthanasia assures an individual dies dignifiedly and appropriately. David Hume a philosopher agreed that an individual has a right to choose the kind of death they would want hence emphasizes on individual liberty value. The right to human dignity maintenance aims at avoiding poor life quality during the process of death than to seek a particular way of having a good idealized death, as is the case of good death. There are also arguments against euthanasia which include sanctity of human life, the wrong diagnoses and new treatments given to patients, the slope that is wedged or slippery, disadvantaged, weak, an d incompetent protection, wrong reasons of choosing death, clinical depression undiagnosed, physicians confidence eroded, and the compromise one makes when choosing to involve others in his/her death. Active and passive euthanasia Active euthanasia occurs in situations where another person or medical professions do something deliberately that,

Women Should Be Equal To Men Essay Example for Free

Women Should Be Equal To Men Essay Are women of less importance than men? In this paper, I will attempt to explore the difference in pay scales, which exist between men and women. It appears that women face discrimination on the economic front as they receive lesser pay scales, both nationally and internationally. Whether a woman is in the business world, or in the skilled labor profession, her salary does not equal that of the male counterpart. It is because of the ancient world view that men are the bread-winners of the family, and hence, in a male dominated society, women may continue to experience a gender disparity in the pay scales. I believe that the primary goal of the business world should be to create an atmosphere where men and women gain equal benefits. In my social work class, we learned that employee is dissatisfied with the feeling of being undervalued, and thus, it can take a toll on the productivity of the entire workforce. Therefore, companies should give equal opportunities to both men and women. For example, in education sector, the educated women with a Bachelor’s degree are only a small percentage of the total number of employees, and the percentage of educated women with a Master’s degree is much lower. Besides, their income is also lesser than men. In my field of social work, there are a high percentage of women who still earn lesser than men, and represent only a small number in the management positions. There are three tiers of occupations, which are grouped according to education: Managers and professionals, job supervisors including non-professional as well as self-employed workers, technicians, police, fire-fighters, clerks, etc. Read more:Â  Equality Between Man and Woman Essay , and less skilled workers like sales clerks, food and related service workers, unskilled blue collar workers, etc. In ancient American society, it was noted that the white women worked at home for rearing her children, irrespective of financial status, or social class of the family. At present, the employment market is operating on wage basis to meet the growing demands for production of goods. Considering the current gender bias situation in employment, men still have greater chances of being promoted than women in the upper management positions. Both white women and minority women placed at middle management positions face obstacles for getting promotion to upper management positions because most of the upper executives and operating officers are men, who tend to exclude hiring as well as promotion of women to higher management positions. Further promotions are often given to men who are already at the top of the ladder. It is a pity that women face problems of competition with men in the same profession upon graduation from college, even in the age of technological advancement. The solution of the problem is to give the same pretest to both men and women for judging their eligibility to qualify for equal pay scales for doing equal work. Moreover, it should be highlighted in the media that women should also have equal rights as men. Finally, I believe that this was a great subject to study, but I could not find the existence of gender bias in administrative and low pay scale clerical positions, where women are employed in comparatively larger numbers than women at either management positions, or in upper class professional positions such as engineers, doctors and lawyers. However, it is interesting to note that there are more women who own their business corporations worth billions of dollars. Although the gender bias gap may not be disappearing in terms of the fewer number of women at higher positions and grant of lesser pay scales to women, the appearance of independent women in charge of corporations, has yielded some fame and social status to the women population as a whole, which can be considered to reduce the gender gap to some extent.

Johnson & Johnson Essay Example for Free

Johnson Johnson Essay The situation of Johnson and Johnson ethics came about in October 1982, Tylenol, a leading pain killer in medicine in the United States of America. At that particular time the company faced a tremendous crisis of seven persons reported dead in Chicago after taking the extra strength Tylenol capsules. After wards it was reported that the an unknown person suspects put 65 milligram strength of deadly cyanide into the Tylenol capsules, 10000 more than that what is required to kill a human being. It was the most important issue of this case. (Wolnik, 1984). This particular situation occurred at the time the product reached the shelves. The medicines are removed from the shelves infected with deadly strength cyanide and exactly kept in the same shelves, so that no one can able to understand. The whole thing went wrong from there itself . It badly affected the company because Tylenol controlled 37% of its share with revenue of about $1. 2 million. Immediately after this cyanide poisonings Tylenol market share went down to seven percent. (Fearn-Banks, 2007) The three ethical important issues that the company has taken is that of (a) had to make a decision to create an awareness by public announcement about the consumption of the product. Also the Johnson and Johnson company was faced with the dilemma of the best way to deal with the problem without destroying the reputation of the company and its most profitable product. The very important decision was taken by the company is that they a step of protecting the people first, and (B) second, McNeil consumer products, as subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson immediately conducted a product recall from the entire country which amounted to about a loss of $100 million dollars and 31 million bottles . Also they have halted all the advertisement of the product. But it was sure that the Johnson and Johnson company was not responsible for the tampering of the product they assumed responsibility by ensuring public safety first and recalled all of their capsules from the market. (c) In fact, in February of 1986, when a woman was reported dead from cyanide poisoning in Tylenol capsules, Johnson Johnson permanently removed all of the capsules from the market. Based on the ethical (fair) issues, what are the principal realistic (sensible) options available to the decision makers? The principal realistic options available to the decision makers is to re- introduce the product into the market by applying the ideas that are listed below, First, the product was removed from the market and the Johnson and Johnson company had to come up with a campaign to re introduce the product and bring back the confidence back to the consumers and as well as to the doctors. Second, Tylenol products were re-introduced containing a triple-seal tamper resistant packaging. It became the first company to comply with the Food and Drug Administration mandate of tamper-resistant packaging. Furthermore, they promoted caplets, which are more resistant to tampering. Third, In order to motivate consumers to buy the product, they offered a $2. 50 off coupon on the purchase of their product. They were available in the newspapers as well as by calling a toll-free number. Fourth, to recover loss stock from the crisis, Johnson Johnson made a new pricing program that gave consumers up to 25% off the purchase of the product. (Mitchell 1989). Fifth, Over 2250 sales people made presentations for the medical community to restore confidence on the product. (Fearn-Banks, 2007) Finally the considered judgment that has taken by the Tylenol Company is the best because it has the reason Tylenol reacted so quickly and in such a positive manner to the crisis stems from the companys mission statement. On the companys credo written in the mid-1940s by Robert Wood Johnson, he stated that the companys responsibilities were to the consumers and medical professionals using its products, employees, the communities where its people work and live, and its stockholders. Therefore, it was essential to maintain the safety of its publics to maintain the company alive. Johnson Johnsons responsibility to its publics first proved to be its most efficient public relations tool. It was the key to the brands survival. (Wolnik, 1984) In my opinion the ethical priorities and the right commitments of the organization are discussed below: 1. A system has to prepare that will allow to respond to the emergency- Although emergencies are unexpected by nature, and one can make a list of the predicted problems and implement a plan to possibly deal with them. For example, a good idea is to hold a brainstorming session with influential members of the organization to identify events that might bring unfavorable publicity. 2. A policy has to develop by each company that they should have a set of policies or guidelines to deal with emergencies. When asked by the media what the companys policies are about a certain situation, your spokesperson should be able to answer firmly. This assures the public that the companys employees are reliable and knowledgeable. 3. It is always necessary to create a crisis management team that will assign certain individuals to be fully knowledgeable about the companys policies and who are efficient in problem solving to deal with emergencies. The right commitment will be to appoint a team leader, a spokesperson to deal with the media, team members to deal with the victims and emergency officials, and others to guide the staff and volunteers. 4. To assemble and to organize resources one should make sure to have up-to-date information to be able to react immediately without having to do extensive research. The resources include: lists of contacts for team members, volunteers, staff, as well as emergency officials such as police, hospitals and the fire department. (Baum, 1996) 5. TO analyze the situation and gather all the facts the safety and the security have been restored, to gather the information of the incident and begin thinking of a solution to the problem. It is not necessary to blow the problem out of proportion before gathering all the facts. 6. It is required to assign the team member to personally and kindly contact the families of those involved to inform them about the situation. 7. Communicate with the media: The only way for your affected publics to be informed is by watching or listening to the media. Therefore, it is your duty to inform the media outlets as soon as possible about the situation. The above few points according to me are the right choice to boost the right commitment of the organization. Direct and Indirect Impacts on Health in New Zealand

Direct and Indirect Impacts on Health in New Zealand Nina Grace A. Martinez ASSESSMENT 2 This report is about the different direct and indirect impacts on health in New Zealand and in which these determinants will affect the inequalities in health. Determinant Factors In order to improve the health status of the population and reduce health inequalities in New Zealand, it is important to identify and understand the main factors that protect and promote good health. These factors are known as the determinants of health. Some of these factors are income and poverty, employment and occupation, education, housing, and culture and ethnicity. Social networking is also a factor and of increasing interest. There is now good evidence that social, cultural and economic factors are the most important determinants of good health. Demographic distribution There are 4,579,228 people in total here in New Zealand. It is estimated that there is an increase of one person every 5 minutes. Statistically, there is 1 birth in every 8 minutes and 49 seconds, 1 death in every 19 minutes and 2 seconds and a net migration in every 8 minutes and 25 seconds. For life expectancy, statistically more females live longer than males, approximately 83% females and 79% males. This is due to the higher number of males who are introduced early to smoking, alcohol and drugs. It happens even within the family, inside their own houses wherein, as narrated by you (Ms. Alma Villanueva), that a seven (7) year old child, if I’m not mistaken, was already been using drugs. Income Income is the most important determinant of health and is strongly related to health and well-being. On average, household income in New Zealand declined between 1981 and 1993, with single parent, Maori and Pacific households experiencing the greatest income reductions. The link between poverty and ill health is clear; with exemptions like the most financially incapable families experience the highest rates of illness and premature death. Greater income inequality within society may also be associated with increased overall mortality. Both poverty and income inequalities increased in New Zealand over the past decade. Having less income will lessen an individual or families access to health care. All other problems correlate with low income household. A person will be hesitant to seek for any medical treatment fearing what the cost might be. He or she is more concern on what to put on the table. Employment Employment also plays a particular part in health. Income and employment goes hand in hand as a determinant for health. When a person is unemployed, obviously he or she has a low income or none at all. This will be a factor for him or her to even sustain for him or herself more so with the access to health if he or she is ill. Employment not only affects a person’s physical health but also his or her mental health because being unemployed may bring depression and other psychological ailments due to lack of food and any means to sustain his or her health and well-being and limited or no access to health care services. Even though it is important to have jobs for good health, there are also some occupation related risks that can jeopardize an individual’s health and well-being like causing him or her injuries while at work. Education Low level of education is associated with poor health. Education goes alongside with income and employment as it determines one’s status in society and economy. Having good or higher educational level will make one more productive in terms of having a job and making more income thus more literate and are able to comprehend with any medical treatments needed for one’s well-being and health. Educated people can make healthier decisions in life about health-related habits such as diet and exercise. Statistically speaking, around 20% of New Zealand adults have poor literacy skills. Housing Houses here in New Zealand are very expensive. The high cost of houses is making it difficult for families with low income to budget their expenses for food, education, transport and health services. Because of the high cost of houses, families tend to overcrowd in one house thus making them more susceptible to diseases like respiratory infection or meningococcal disease. Culture and Ethnicity/Traditions/Religious beliefs Cultural factors have its positive and negative influence on health. Like for example, Maoris have a higher number of mortality rate than in New Zealanders because Maoris are more passive in their attitude towards health and most of them lack education and some have no jobs at all thus they have no access to health care services. Maori people experience more health problems thus their mortality and morbidity rates are higher compared to non-Maoris. These are all due to poor socioeconomic status. Some cultures also have their different ways of treating or dealing with any physical ailments. Like for example in my home country, the Philippines, we have different traditions or cultural practices in dealing with illnesses. One of which is consulting a â€Å"quack doctor† or faith healer wherein this particular faith healer is said to be an expert in curing any unexplainable illness. We Filipinos are believers of the supernatural beings in this world. Especially those who are on a below-average familial status, they are those that strongly believe in faith healers or the supernatural beings. For them, any illness is associated with â€Å"na engkanto† or witchcraft. That being said, any traditions or cultural practices has its impacts on health. Consulting faith healers or others with no medical background or knowledge will delay treatment or even cause further damage or worst, death, to patients because of malpractice. Another thing besides culture and tradition is religion. Religion plays a role in health as well. Some religious groups practice differently towards health. For example, Jehovah’s Witness people, they are not allowed to receive any blood transfusion, even if this will prolong the life of the person, still it is not allowed because it will be against their religious practice. Social Networking/Social Cohesion People with strong family, community and cultural ties have better health than people who are socially isolated. Socially isolated people are more prone to having mental or psychological problems. These people include single parent families, people with mental illness, people who are unemployed and those who are living alone and who are old. Being isolated from society or the community is depressing, making one vulnerable to any harm possible. Political Values Making policy that influence health is important. The New Zealand government is responsible for it. A policy about health and well-being of the community is very critical. These policies differ from country to country. One of the policies here in New Zealand is the National Drug Policy wherein its aim is to reduce or limit the supply and use of harmful drug related substances like alcohol, tobacco and illegal drugs. With this policy, the people of New Zealand are now more aware of its effects and consequences if they use or consume such harmful drugs or alcohol. This policy is pro health and enhancement of the people’s well-being. Public Attitudes on health Attitude is a person’s way of thinking or what he or she feels towards something or maybe even someone. An individual’s value is the backbone of his or her attitude. However he or she perceives health is completely because of how she or he views it. Behavior on the other hand is how that person acts or reacts to a particular situation. It is also influenced by the attitude that person has. It is known that New Zealand is a multicultural country. There is a mix of every race and ethnicity in New Zealand thus, each and every ethnicity, race or culture has its own beliefs and practices on health, and each has its own perception or attitude towards health. For example, the Maori people, majority of them are not educated; therefore most of them are illiterate thus making them unaware of what are the benefits of having access to health care services. Another example is the Pacific Islanders, wherein they believe that smoking cessation must come from within, meaning that there should not be any assistance from any programmes of the Ministry of Health to help someone, from the Pacific Islander group, to quit smoking. Others, however, are more aware of what illness and health is. Like the non-Maoris or other New Zealanders and even the migrants, because they are more educated and knowledgeable as to what illness can do to them and how important health is to all. Awareness is the key to good health and well-being of a person. However, for some who are aware, still there are hesitations to access health services because of the cost. Cost of the medical consultation and the medication. Another factor is the lack of availability or time to seek treatment. These are all due to the different determinant factors affecting health and well-being. The Maoris and Pacific Islanders or other ethnic groups that lack awareness should be taught of the importance of health. Make them aware of its effects and consequences if they do not access health care service when they are sick. Like for example the importance of immunization that provides protection from communicable diseases. Also the importance of screening programmes for Cancer for example. Screening is highly important to detect potential problems at an early stage especially with asymptomatic people. It can also provide or offer effective interventions. Awareness and prevention is key to a healthy well-being of a person. To access health, the people must first know that health services do exist. Health is strongly influence by a wide range of cultural, social, economic and environmental factors here in New Zealand. A person’s income, education, ethnicity, culture and social status can be very influential with his or her health and well-being. Without income and employment there will be issues concerning his or her basic needs, access to health, transportation and other needs. One must be educated to ensure jobs. Poverty and unemployment is rampant in New Zealand despite the booming outlook of its country. The government plays a vital role in formulating laws or policies derived from national and international laws that will then benefit or help the poor and unemployed people of New Zealand by subsidizing health services, providing free houses and free education for children of poor families. Prioritizing health on the agenda of the public policy will make the public more aware of the significance of health on the government and policy maker’s decisions. The participation of the public to the policy is a very strong factor to determine the success of the policy. Bibliography Health and Pacific Peoples in New Zealand. (n.d.). Ethical and Legal Considerations in Social Work Essay -- Social Work E

Shaniya Robinson arrives at the County Human Services Authority for her monthly appointment with her social worker. Ms. Robinson is a 25 year old African American female who is receiving treatment for schizophrenia from the adult behavioral health services program. During a session the client reports that she is under a great deal of stress because she is having difficulty adjusting to being a new mother. Her five month old baby girl Shanice is teething and cries frequently. Ms. Robinson is also struggling financially because she is currently unemployed; her mental illness makes it difficult to sustain employment long term. And she does not receive support from the child’s father on a consistent basis. The combination of these interactional difficulties is weighing heavily on the client who reports an increase in positive and negative symptoms (i.e. auditory hallucinations and social withdrawal). Because the client does not have insurance she disclosed to her social worker that she self-medicates using marijuana in an effort to manage symptoms. More noteworthy, the client explains that she uses the same method to soothe the baby by blowing marijuana smoke in the infant's face. It is certain that Ms. Robinson divulged such information for several reasons, she wants help and she believes that any information she shares within the context of her sessions are confidential. Confidentiality The expectation in the practitioner/client relationship is that any information disclosed will not be shared with others. Confidentiality is emphasized to provide the client with a safe haven in which to share traumatic events or embarrassing personal information about themselves (Krase, 2013). Life In The Hood :: essays research papers

He lay in his bed motionless, reflecting upon his life and how it had changed so quickly. He had lost his mother to an evil cocaine addiction a year earlier and was left to take care of his younger brother. The rent was 3 months over due, the phone was cut off, and the electricity was most likely next. He had reached the point were he was fed up with life. Why had he been put in this position? He put most of the blame on his mother for she had been the one who had spent all of their money on drugs. But still he didn’t understand why he had to be responsible for his mother’s actions. What really enraged Maurice, was how selfish his mother was. She would rather get a quick high than ensure that her family was taken care of. But these thoughts occurred in his mind night after night. And each night he would come to the realization that he cannot escape from the grips of poverty. The only possible option for him was to work hard for the pennies that he was being paid. The alarm clock was blasting. Maurice woke up and looked at the time. It was 9:32am and he was a half hour late for work. In a panic he put on his shoes and ran out the door. He knew once he got to work Tony, the restaurant manager, was going to chew him out. He had been late earlier that week and Tony told him that if he was late one more time he was going to give Maurice the axe. So he began thinking of a good excuse to tell the boss why he was late. But his attention soon shifted when a 1999 Mercedes Benz SLK 400 sitting on twenty-inch chrome rims pulled over about 50 yards in front of him. His sprint slowed to a walk the instant he laid eyes upon the jet-black beauty. He kept walking towards the car trying to see who the owner was. To his amazement a young man, around his age, stepped out of the car. He knew at that point this guy didn’t earn his money the true American way; hard work and discipline. He had to have been a â€Å"Mob Pawn†. They were called this because the mob used them to do most of the work and were sacrificed in many situations just so they could win the â€Å"chess match†.

The Little Ice Age: A World Systems Approach Essays -- Climate Environ

The Little Ice Age: A World Systems Approach In today’s world, after more than a century of the internal combustion engine and the large-scale burning of fossil fuels, the climate has come to the forefront of public debate. As both sides use evidence from past climates to support their points, at the heart of this debate is history. For this reason, as well as for the political implications that the polemics of this issue engenders, objective science and objective historical study must figure prominently, however objectivity should not be subsumed for conformity. Debate is part of the process that brings science closer to truth. The study of climate is no different and the Little Ice Age is an area of study in which there is currently a healthy debate going on. Scholars’ opinions differ on numerous aspects of this period, even to the point of disputing its existence. Topics ranging from a definition of the characteristics of the period to its starting date, and its impacts on human society and hi story are all part of this debate. Among the multiplicity of issues surrounding the Little Ice Age, these are chief and, in order to follow a comprehensible thread, will be the focus of this paper. Describing and analyzing the major views relating to these issues (proposed by historians and non-historians alike) should provide a relatively full picture of the debate and shed light on current thought about the topic. The importance of climate to human history is an issue that has interested historians only relatively recently. According to M.J. Ingram, â€Å"(t)he majority of historians have been content largely to ignore† the implications of long-term climatic change on human societies.[1] Year-to-y... ...s the ‘Little Ice Age’?† in T. Global Media, Global Culture Essay

‘The boundaries that separate one nation from another are no more real than the equator. They are merely convenient demarcations of ethnic, linguistic and cultural entities. They do not define business requirements or consumer trends.'(IBM). Boundaries delimit countries. Or, at least, this is their function. Boundaries separate traditions, languages, governments, currencies, people, economies and cultures. But, is this true? Nationalisms are rising in a world that tends to the globalization. Is it so that we are all equal for the multinational companies? There are a lot of definitions of globalization. Most of the definitions (to not say all of them) are related with the capitalism system. According with Marà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ Sà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ez globalization has three steps in the history until arrives to the actual situation: â€Å"We can understand globalisation in two senses. In a wider sense, it means the expansive tendency that took place in the capitalist system. This concept talks about the power that drove capitalism to go across the boundaries to look for raw material and new markets. In a strict sense it means a concrete phase that begins with three concrete historical facts: the success of the neo-liberal powers such as USA or United Kingdom (Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher), the foreign debt in the Third World (1982) and the fall of Berlin’s wall in 1989†. Sà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ez (1999), p. 12 All of us (I’m referring to the develop countries) are connected between computers and internet, press, radio, television and cinema. We can learn new traditions or new ways of life with each media. Everybody knows who is Nicole Kidman or Gucci. We can drink a Coke with a Big Mac in somewhere. There are not boundaries for information or products. We can see the same advertisement in US or in India. But are not they different? Don’t they have different culture, tradition or language? New ways of advertisement can overcome the boundaries. Only have to show images and sell the products without words. The media configures our lives, our way behaviours, our minds. They make us. They are cultural factories. They make the perfect target to the products, the perfect consumers’ trends. The national identity is threatened. â€Å"Young people drink the same soft drinks, smoke the same cigarettes, wear identical branded clothing and shoes, play the same computer games, watch the same Hollywood films and listen to the same Western pop music.† Ellwood, W. (2001): pp.53. Governments make pacts about laws and economy. The European countries are being united in the European Union (EU). Although the citizen of each country have different tradition, they culture is very similar and is almost like the American one. These countries share currencies, economics’ politics and, in soon time, laws. â€Å"The challenge of producing and marketing in many countries, with many currencies, has fed the creation of modern international money market and currency trading.† Davis, J (1999): pp.38 Countries member of the European Union share a European Parliament, Justice Court of the European Communities, European Central Banc, Committee of the Regions and so on. The products of each country can transfer boundaries without taxes. These products are sold without differences in each country. It doesn’t matter if are German or Italian. The products are sold like if they were from the same town. They share a new globalizated culture. Somehow this globalizated culture has adopted elements characteristics from each country. In this way the globalizated culture can survive. â€Å"Business are in the business of government and governments are in the business of business.† Sivanandan, A. (1999): pp.9. Sivanandan makes a perfect summary of as the governments are in disposition of the great companies. And these companies want to make only one market around the world. In this way, they only have to make only one marketing campaign. Helped by mass media and governments, multinationals can obtain their objectives. Governments take profits of the business and help to the great companies to develop their plans. Countries depend on the others in the production of their products. They have decentralized the production of the products in different countries looking for a cheap manual labour. â€Å"This stretching of the boundaries of the economically possible by new technologies happens at al points of the circuit of capital – in production, and in the circulation of commodities and money. As companies, driven to expand profits, take advantage of the new boundaries, the components of â€Å"globalisation† take shape.† Davis, J (1999), pp.38 But in this world where culture and business are globalizated, nationalism take more popularity around the countries. Nobody wants to lose his identity. They mixed the globalizated culture (American culture) and the traditional culture. French person will keep it traditions and way of life but will wear the same cloth, will drink the same drink, will eat the same food and will see the same films than a Cyprus or Turkey person. In conclusion, globalization is a process that shows two faces: the first one shows the differences between countries and the diversity around the world, creating a nationalism and pride to belong to a country. And on the other hand shows how the countries depends on the others and there are similitude between countries, cultures and markets. In this way, I agree with the topic of the assignment: boundaries only delimit ethnics, languages and cultural entities. Marketing, mass media, governments and multinationals have made disappear the boundaries and the great differences between the cultures creating an only and great world-wide market. In Praise of the F Word Essay

According to, In kudos of the F Word, by Mary Sherry tens of thousands depart graduate high direct with meaningless diplomas. Those with meaningless diplomas be the ones whos been passing along so far though they dont truly consider the materials taught to them. Sherry argues that our commandmental system is to fault for cheating those disciples out of a proper education however, an easy remedy is for instructors to routine the go card of ill luck. Sherry crys that before assimilators send word concentrate, the teacher involvefully to foreshorten their attention low gear.I book with Sherry that its unfair to those pupil cheated by our educational system nevertheless her trump card of break awayure doesnt solve the problem. or else, it feels to a greater extent than akin a threat to the student than a motivation. Her method is at variance(p) for every students because whole student atomic number 18 variant and it takes a teachers involvement to unders tand, non a teachers threat. Sherry used blame the students pretermit of concentration to the clique exclusively instead she now blames the failure to get the students attention. No matter what doubt are at hand for the student, the teacher require to get the students attention first. Sherry states that in that respect are many focal points to do this depending on the teaching style but one accepted way is the trump card of failure. She points out an exercising of her son who was lacking attention in classify and then received the trump card of failure. It resulted in her son finishing the semester with an A. I feel like Sherrys argument is incomplete. She doesnt acknowledge that all students are different, and that some accompany from a more rugged sufferground than others.Different students need to be treated differently, so one method go out not work on all students. For example, thither are students that plainly do not understand the material taught to them so ins tead they leave excuses. Teachers volition underwrite the students excuse as a lack of attention and fail that student but instead all that student needs is a bit of guidance. Sherrys method go out not work for students that are afraid to pick up for back up. Furthermore, the threat will not help the student but give the doubt in their abilities. A tool for motivation overrules into a tool for discouragement.Instead of facing the challenge head on with the help of the teacher, the students are left alone with the threat doughnut in their ears. Students that cornerstonet take the stuff eventually drop out, students that can ripe concord to themselves and barely passing by. I admit that Sherry brings up a good point In localise for a student to succeed in initiate, they first need to be attentive. Teachers need to find way to get the students attention but Sherrys one all be all way will not help the teacher nor the students. Sherry implies that students perceive educati on as less substantial compared to their adult counterparts. no matter what environments they come from students will not put school as a top priority on their list. Her argument was that for adults, even with complications in life i. e. unemployment, drug, abusive relationship, still make an effort towards higher education. Sherry states that compared to the adults, students rather be rakish while on cruise control by dint of school. I wholeheartedly agree with Sherry that students would rather feed a fun stress free school life instead of a prison, but I have a problem with her implications of a august environments.Sherry hints that environments does not coin a students involvement in school but i think shes severely inaccurate. Where a student come from, i. e. his lifes background, greatly affect what kind of person that student will turn out to be. For example, a student can come from a background that greatly cling tos education at the same time, another student can come from a background that could care significantly less about education. Not everyone is molded the same, there are students that are eager to learn, while there are also students that would refuse the help of a teacher.Sherry claims that the threat of flunking can be used as a positive teaching tool a show of confidence by the teacher and lift to the student. However, She also completely fails to specify why students fail in the first place. There are students who doesnt value education because of their unsupportive parents. Sherrys son might be an inaccurate example because not all students have an english teacher as a parent. My friend Hao is a perfect example. Hao and I were best friends in middle school and freshmen form high school. His parents are always working so hes exceedingly relaxed towards school. Everytime I precipitate out with him hes either vie video games or watching movies. Eventually the lack of care for school caught up with him and he was held back for anothe r freshman year. We try to keep in touch but our friendship grew apart because we arent in the same grade anymore. Sometime we would go weeks without seeing each other and the intervals just got hourlong each time. The times I do see him, I can tell hes miserable. He dropped out without telling me and to this day I still wonder if I encouraged him alittle more about school, maybe he wouldve graduated with me. To my friend, Hao, school was just not important to him and even a threat of failure will not prevail on _or_ upon him otherwise. In his world, games were more important and school is just a nuisance. He was never taught the true value of an education by his parents. I know hes not alone and there are many students like him. Although their world might not be gaming, it could be something else like friends, drugs, intercourse, etc.Sherrys trump card of failure would of failed them, instead they need support not threats. While Sherry may claim that the success of the trump card of failure in the past. I would like to point out that things are forgotten for a reason. In this care the trump card of failure is deemed ineffective against the youths of today. Her method of teachers victimisation threats against students for their attention will not help but damage. Everyone is unique and teachers need to deploy unique play to encourage students. A word of threat can only get so far, but the emergence greatly outweighs the worth.
